Best Upcoming Games of 2022
It only feels like moments since we all gathered together with one unifying voice to consign 2020 to the bin by embracing 2021. Due to one reason or another, many big releases planned for 2020 and 2021 have had to be delayed into 2022. Whilst this has meant the last couple of years have been hit hard for games, it does mean that 2022 is set to offer us a bumper crop. So let’s not wallow in the past; let’s look to the future and take a peek at the best upcoming games of 2022!
Monster Hunter Rise (PC)
Release date: 12th January
Whilst Monster Hunter Rise may have made waves on the Nintendo Switch, it’s sure to be one of the biggest releases on PC during 2022. Expanding on much of what made Monster Hunter World so great, Monster Hunter Rise is an evolution of the series and will give fans all the hunts, monsters and palicoes you can shake a stick at.
Elden Ring
Release date: 21st January
If you look up “long awaited” in a dictionary, you’ll probably find Elden Ring, the open world game from Soulsborne developers FromSoftware. This looks to be a huge departure for the team, with mounted combat and stealth allowing you to take on challenges in multiple different ways. Elden Ring will be released in January 2022, and is definitely already set to be one of the best upcoming games of 2022.
Horizon Forbidden West
Release date: 18th February
Horizon Zero Dawn was a stunning open-world game that saw gamers dive into a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by terrifying, too-clever robot creatures. The hunt is soon back on for PlayStation 4 and 5 owners as we get to take Aloy west to more tropical areas around San Francisco and the Yosemite Valley. There’s no word of Horizon Forbidden West on PC just yet, but we’ll be waiting with baited breath.
Gran Turismo 7
Release date: 4th March
One of the heralds of a new console generation is the appearance of a Gran Turismo game, showing everyone just what next-generation graphics looks like. Gran Turismo 7 is set to be no different, with eye-popping visuals that will set it apart from any Gran Turismo game that’s come before it. You’ll be able to start racing on your PlayStation 4 or 5 next March.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl
Release date: 28th April
It almost doesn’t feel real to have a new Stalker game on the horizon, but here we are with S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl coming to PC and Xbox Series X/S. This series has always been unique to play and to explore and this, the first game in the series for 13 years, is set to bring us back to Pripyat all over again. Certain to drag us through numerous alien landscapes and experiences, Stalker 2 is already shaping up to be one of the best upcoming games of 2022. We’re raring to get our hands on it!
Pre-purchase the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl Standard, Deluxe or Ultimate edition from the Green Man Gaming Store for exclusive pre-order bonuses!
Starfield
Speaking of departures, Starfield features two. Firstly it’s a thematic departure for Bethesda Game Studios, marking the first non-Fallout, non-Elder Scrolls game they’ve worked on for a while. That in itself is pretty exciting. The second is more literal, as it’ll see us take to the stars as we explore a brand new sci-fi universe. In fact its designer – Bethesda’s legendary Todd Howard – has described it as “like Skyrim in space.” Nice.
Bomb Rush Cyberfunk
Release date: TBC
For a certain kind of fan, the name “Hideki Naganuma” will set the heart fluttering. The acclaimed composer behind Jet Set Radio and Jet Set Radio Future is back with Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, a game that takes inspiration from those two games whilst switching up the action with some nifty free-running skills. There’s no specific release date in 2022 confirmed just yet, but the excitement is already palpable.
God of War: Ragnarok
Release date: TBC
If there’s an award for most anticipated game, then God of War: Ragnarok would definitely take it. This sequel to 2018’s God of War – which revitalised the long-running series – will see the action pick up three years after the previous game, delving deep into Norse mythology. Now accompanied by a more grown up Atreus, this looks set to be a stunning experience filled with brutal combat and beautiful vistas. We’ll keep an eye out for a confirmed 2022 release date and let you know!
Kerbal Space Program 2
Release date: TBC
Finally we come to Kerbal Space Program 2. The first game was a brilliant exploration of giving people a tonne of freedom and watching them blow up rockets over and over again, basically learning space physics by trial and failure. Kerbal Space Program 2 looks to expand on everything that made the original so uniquely compelling, now taking us into interstellar space for the first time. There’s no confirmed release date just yet, but Kerbal Space Program 2 should be hitting a console or a PC near you sometime in 2022.
So there you have it – our picks for the best upcoming games of 2022. Though of course, the future is always full of surprises, and we’re sure there’ll be something that appears out of nowhere to steal our hearts!
